Palomar Mountain Run 2012
January 22nd, 2012
Aaron I mapped out a route for the run to Palomar Mountain. This should be fairly straightforward. We’d start in Escondido at the Fresh & Easy on Ash & Valey Parkway (this is the west junction of two of the three main highways on this route). Then we’ll head east through Ramona and head north on Highway 79 at San Ysabel. Then we’ll take Highway 76 northwest past Lake Henshaw before climbing the East Grade Road through Palomar Mountain State Park (no fee) we’ll head to the South Grade Road which provides some great twists and turns to navigate down the mountain before meeting up with Highway 76 again. Then we’ll head south at Rincon on Highway S6 and cut down to Lake Wohlford. From there we’ll head back onto Valley Parkway and end back at the Fresh & Easy.
The trip is 82.5 miles and should take 2 hours and 15 minutes, not accounting for stops.
We’ll probably stop several places along the way as this route is very scenic and offers stunning vistas on almost every mile of the route. I highly suggest bringing a camera. Also of course everyone should fill up with gas in Escondido before starting and make sure you bring water and other standard supplies you may need.
It does snow up in Palomar Mountain, but it tends to stay off the roadways, and we can easily pick a nice sunny day to do this run.
